Home >> Glossary >> Mercury
Mercury is a chemical element (symbol Hg) commonly known as quicksilver, which is a shiny-silver, liquid heavy metal with an especially high cohesion. When heated, Mercury has the property of expanding, whit a proportionally expansion when the heat lies between 0 °C and 100°C. Mercury is highly toxic in gaseous form and evaporates even at room temperatures, which is why mercury-vapour lamps (e.g. fluorescent tubes, UV tubes) must not be thrown in the household waste.
