Home >> Glossary >> Aspergillus
Aspergillus is a microorganism which belongs to the thermotolerant moulds. Aspergillus niger (black mould), Aspergillus amstelodami and Aspergillus fumigatus are the known members of this genus. They grow best at high temperature, and a number of these aspergillus species form metabolic products that are toxic for humans (mycotoxins) by causing food poisoning. Moreover, airborne spores can result in allergies and even attack human organs. Aspergillus spores are extremely UVC-resistant, so that very high doses are needed.
